In March 2024, the heat low-pressure
cell covered upper Thailand much of the month, causing hot weather in upper Thailand
almost entire month with scorching hot in the northern, northeastern and central
regions in some period. The average temperature was above normal nationwide, especially
Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan and Phayao where temperatures were higher than
other areas with 1.8 to 2.2 oC above normal. The average temperature
over Thailand in March was 1.4 oC higher than normal. However, with
the extending of the high-pressure area from China to cover the northeastern
Thailand and the South China Sea, the prevailing of the southerly and
southeasterly winds over upper Thailand and the passage of the westerly trough through
the northern Thailand and upper Laos at times. These resulted in rainfall with
thunderstorm, gusty wind and hail and temperature relatively dropped,
especially in the northeastern region. The southern region also experienced hot
weather, especially along west coast. Concurrently, with the strengthened of
the easterly and southeasterly winds that prevailed over the Gulf of Thailand,
southern region and the Andaman Sea at late month, increasing in rainfall was
observed at that period. Monthly rainfall was below normal
in almost regions i.e. northern region 4.2 mm (13%), central region 1.0 mm (2%),
eastern region 3.2 mm (5%) southern region (east coast) 65.5 mm (76%) and
southern region (west coast) 71.2 mm (69%) on the contrary with above normal rainfall
in northeastern region 24.1 mm (53%). The averaged total rainfall over Thailand
was lower than normal 13.3 mm (24%). More details were as follow.
