In July 2024, the southwest monsoon prevailed over
the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand nearly the entire month and
it was strengthened in the middle of the month. Additionally, the monsoon
trough periodically lay across the northern and northeastern part of Thailand. It
lay over the northern Thailand into the low-pressure cell covering the
northeastern part in the middle of the month and lay into the low-pressure cell
covering the upper Laos and upper Vietnam for a few days and it shifted
northward to lie over upper northern and upper Laos at the end of the month. Moreover,
the tropical storm “PRAPIROON, (2404)” in the upper South China Sea moved pass
the Hainan Island entering the Gulf of Tonkin and made landfall at Quang Ninh, upper
Vietnam on July 23. Later on, it became a tropical depression and covered upper
Vietnam as an active low-pressure cell. Due to these conditions, there was plentiful
rainfall in the upper Thailand, with intermittent of heavy to extremely heavy
rainfall, particularly in the middle and end of the month, there was heavy to
extremely heavy rainfall in the northern, northeastern, and lower coastal areas
of the eastern parts inducing flooding in several areas. In southern part,
there were rainfall almost the whole month especially in the middle of the
month when the southwest monsoon was strengthened. The average total rainfall
overall Thailand in this month was 21% higher than normal. The average
temperature of Thailand was 0.3 oC warmer than normal. Monthly
rainfall was above normal in almost parts i.e. northern part 30.9 mm (16%),
northeastern part 35.3 mm (15%), central part 38.9 mm (24%), eastern part 155.2
mm (54%) and southern part (east coast) 20.9 mm (18%) with inversely below
normal in the southern part (west coast) 6.3 mm (2%). For more details were as follow.
