Weather Advisory
Subject: Tropical Depression
and heavy to very heavy rain in Thailand
No. 1 (224/2025)
------------------------
At 7.00 a.m.
LST (29 August 2025), the active low-pressure cell over the middle of South
China Sea has intensified into a tropical depression. At 10:00 a.m., the center
of the storm was located at latitude 16.5 degrees north and longitude 112.5
degrees east, with maximum sustained winds near the center at about 55 km/h.
The storm is moving west-northwest with a speed of 20 km/hr. and is expected to
intensify into a tropical storm before making landfall in northern Vietnam by
the afternoon of 30 August. Afterward, it is forecasted to weaken into a
depression and move over northern Laos, and later weaken further into a strong
low-pressure area, moving along the monsoon trough into Thailand’s northeastern
region on the night of 30 August, and northern of Thailand by 31 August.
This system will bring
increased rainfall across Thailand from 30 August - 1 September, with heavy to
very heavy rainfall in many areas, accompanied by strong winds in the
northeastern region, particularly in the provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Sakon
Nakhon, Mukdahan, Bung Kan, Nong Khai, Loei, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu,
Kalasin, Khon Kaen, and Chaiyaphum. The northern and upper-central regions will
be affected by 31 August, especially in the lower provinces of Nan, Phrae,
Uttaradit, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet,
Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, and Nakhon Sawan. People in the
country should beware of heavy to very heavy rain, strong wind and accumulation
that may cause flash floods and overflows especially along the waterways near
foothills and lowlands.
The southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of
Thailand will strengthen, leading to heavy rainfall in the eastern and western
southern regions of Thailand. The rather strong wind forces the waves in the
upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf up to 2-3 meters high and above 3 meters
high in thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and keep off
thundershowers, small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf should
keep ashore and people along the coast of the East and the upper South west
coast should beware of storm surge during 30 August - 1 September.
